Expanding Object Access for ArchiCAD Users

sofatableOne of the biggest questions we hear from ArchiCAD users is “how can I build my object library for ArchiCAD.” While users can create their own 3D objects using GDL, this isn’t always practical. And the volume and quality of 3D models and objects from third-party sources is limited.

Enter ModelPort, a new 3D model importer for ArchiCAD. Available as a plug-in for ArchiCAD, ModelPort translates 3D model formats such as Alias Wavefront OBJ and Autodesk FBX, into ArchiCAD Library parts.

“ModelPort will allow ArchiCAD users to access thousands of 3D models and objects previously unavailable to them,” says Akos Monspart, one of the developers of ModelPort. “We are pleased to have created a solution that will make designing in ArchiCAD even better.”

Many third-party sources, such as TurboSquid and DesignConnected, offer thousands of 3D Models that can be used in designing a project. Many of them are free. And many of them are available in OBJ or FBX formats.

Not only does ModelPort import these objects in 3D, it translates a detailed 2D symbol as well. The lines are clean on the import making the drawings inside ArchiCAD clean.

There are three versions of ModelPort available: ModelPort OBJ, which converts OBJ and 3DS formats; ModelPort FBX, which converts FBX and DAE (Collada) formats; and a bundled version that translates all four file formats.

AECObjects.com is the exclusive distributor for ModelPort worldwide. AECObjects.com provides sales, training and object resources for architects, interior designers, contractors, and engineers.

Day8Design Ltd, a group of software developers based in Budapest, Hungary, developed ModelPort. The company specializes in guiding customers through the product development process, starting with the initial idea and ending with the final product.
