MODELPORT

THE ONE AND ONLY OBJECT AND FBX IMPORTER FOR ARCHICAD

MODELPORT is a 3D model and object importer for ArchiCAD. Although ArchiCAD can handle many file formats, the very popular OBJ as well as the standard FBX formats are not among them.

To fill this gap MODELPORT was created. This new add-on constructs ArchiCAD Library parts from Alias Wavefront OBJ, Autodesk FBX, Collada DAE and Autodesk 3D Studio 3DS files.

MODELPORT uses the Autodesk FBX SDK, which is the same code used by Autodesk to create a bridge between their popular 3D software: Maya, Softimage XSI, 3DStudio MAX, etc. Using the FBX SDK means we can provide a reliable connection to these and many other 3D programs.

“MODELPORT just unlocked the door to the vast world of 3D content. This is the missing link that ArchiCAD users will rejoice over!”Dan Hruby, Architect, VisualizeItBuilt

Access to more objects!

We’ve worked with ArchiCAD users for over seventeen years and one of the biggest requests we hear is that users want more objects that are high quality and reflect real products.

With MODELPORT ArchiCAD users get access to a wider range of objects including over 470,000 on TurboSquid!

Popular formats supported

A wealth of architectural elements are produced by modeling and visualization software – but ArchiCAD can’t access many of these formats. With MODELPORT you can now import Alias Wavefront OBJ, Autodesk FBX, Collada DAE and 3D Studio 3DS files.

Design with rich media

Do the interiors of your ArchiCAD models look bland, lacking in character and detail that is important to selling a design? With MODELPORT you can access libraries with beautiful designs of furniture, lighting, appliances and other building elements as well as plants and trees that look real!

Smooth surface 3D models

When you import a SketchUp model using ArchiCAD’s SketchUp import it triangulates curved surfaces. With MODELPORT objects imported from OBJ, FBX, 3DS & DAE formats are automatically created with smooth surfaces. This makes objects look more realistic with higher quality and smaller file size – greatly improving your 3D experience.

Clean 2D symbols

As mentioned above ArchiCAD’s SketchUp import creates objects with triangulated surfaces. This process not only creates triangulation in 3D but also creates triangulated lines in the 2D symbol, creating a messy projected 2D view. Since MODELPORT objects are converted into ArchiCAD objects with smooth surfaces the 2D view it generates is very clean.

High quality rendering content

With the new Cinerender you can create very realistic renderings. But to make your rendering come alive you also need realistic furniture, appliances, lighting, and more. With MODELPORT you can now access extensive libraries of entourage to embellish your renderings.

3D CONTENT

try-callout3FBX and OBJ formats open access to more objects and online libraries. Below are examples of services with content based predominately on these two formats.

FEATURES

try-callout3MODELPORT is a powerful ArchiCAD object importer that manages the conversion of 3D mesh, textures, channels, materials, smooth surfacing and more.

  • Imports mesh objects from .obj, .fbx, .dae and 3ds files

  • Imports a UV mesh which creates clean, consistent texture mapping onto the surface of a 3D model (only one UV Mesh – ArchiCAD limitation). In the checkered sphere image the one on the left is without and the sphere on the right is with UV mapping.

  • Instance mesh support, the practice of rendering multiple copies of the same mesh in a scene at once such as repeating leaves in a tree object.

  • Automatic material parameters are created and assigned to imported textures  from object (only the diffuse texture – standard ArchiCAD material doesn’t support texture on other channels)

  • Automatic material search for missing texture files

  • Custom material assignment for imported object, allowing you to set the material parameter to other ArchiCAD materials

  • Put on Ground library part parameter to automatically move the object to the floor.

  • Scene Item View allows you to select which parts of the object you would like to import before you import the object to ArchiCAD.

  • Automatic surface smoothing will set the smoothness status of the mesh edges during import.

  • Rotation Mini Tool is a parameter you can turn on to interactively rotate the object along the X or Y axis in the 3D Window.
